Ortakoy Istanbul — Ortaköy is a waterfront neighborhood on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, centered on the small, ornate 19th-century Ortaköy Mosque (Büyük Mecidiye Camii) framed by the Bosphorus Bridge behind it — one of the most photographed views in the city. Beyond the mosque, the neighborhood is known for its weekend craft market, waterfront cafés, and kumpir (loaded baked potato) stalls.
The Ortaköy Mosque, completed in 1856 in a neo-Baroque style under Sultan Abdulmejid I, sits directly on the water with the Bosphorus Bridge rising immediately behind it — a juxtaposition of 19th-century Ottoman architecture and 20th-century engineering that’s become one of Istanbul’s signature images, especially at sunset. The surrounding square hosts a lively weekend art and craft market, waterfront tea gardens, and a cluster of stalls selling kumpir, a baked potato loaded with a wide range of toppings that’s become something of an Ortaköy specialty. It’s a lower-key, more local-feeling stop than the Sultanahmet circuit — a place Istanbullus visit on weekends as much as tourists do.

The mosque and waterfront square are free to visit. The mosque follows standard mosque hours, open outside prayer times; the square and market operate into the evening, especially on weekends.
From Taksim, buses run directly to Ortaköy in about 15–20 minutes, or take a taxi. From Sultanahmet, it’s roughly 30 minutes by taxi along the Bosphorus shore, or a tram to Kabataş followed by a short bus or taxi ride.
Ortaköy is known for its waterfront mosque framed by the Bosphorus Bridge, a lively weekend craft market, and kumpir (loaded baked potato) food stalls.
Yes, especially at sunset for the mosque-and-bridge view, and for a more local, less tourist-dense atmosphere than the Sultanahmet historic core.
