Zelve Open Air Museum Cappadocia — Zelve Open-Air Museum is a former cave village spread across three valleys near Göreme, Cappadocia, inhabited continuously from the Byzantine monastic period through to 1952, when residents were evacuated for safety as the rock dwellings deteriorated. It opened as a museum in 1967 and offers a less curated, more atmospheric alternative to the Göreme Open-Air Museum.

Zelve served as an important center of Christian monastic life from the 9th through 13th centuries, home to some of Cappadocia’s earliest seminaries, before continuing as an inhabited Ottoman Turkish village into the 20th century. Its rock-cut Grape Church (Üzümlü Kilise), dating to the 6th century and named for the vine carvings decorating its apse, is among the site’s oldest structures. Unlike the more polished, frescoe-focused Göreme Open-Air Museum, Zelve retains the feel of an abandoned settlement — visitors can wander freely through cave houses, storage rooms and churches spread across three connected valleys, with far fewer curated exhibits and a more exploratory atmosphere.

The site involves significant stairs and uneven paths, not suitable for strollers or limited mobility.
A single ticket covers both Zelve and the nearby Paşabağı fairy chimney site — visit both in one trip.
Bring water and sun protection; there’s little shade across the open valley sections.
Less crowded than Göreme Open-Air Museum, making it a good afternoon alternative.
