Termessos Ancient City Antalya — Termessos is a mountaintop ancient city perched over 1,000 meters up in the Taurus Mountains above Antalya, famous for withstanding a siege by Alexander the Great in 333 BC and never being conquered. Reaching it requires a moderately challenging hike through pine forest, rewarded by ruins set among genuinely dramatic mountain scenery.
Founded by the Solyms, an ancient Anatolian people, Termessos occupied such a defensible mountain position that Alexander the Great’s forces, after besieging it in 333 BC, ultimately withdrew without taking the city — one of the few Anatolian cities to hold out against his campaign. The site now sits within Güllük Mountain National Park, whose rich pine forest and protected plant and animal species make the approach itself part of the appeal, distinct from the more exposed, arid ruin fields at Perge or Aspendos. The city’s theater, carved into the mountainside, offers a dramatically different atmosphere from Aspendos’s urban setting — genuinely remote, largely unrestored, and far less crowded even in peak season.

Entry runs approximately $8–10. Hours generally follow standard site hours, opening in the morning and closing in late afternoon — confirm current times before visiting given periodic seasonal adjustment.
Termessos sits about 17km northwest of Antalya, up a winding mountain road. There’s no public transit option — a rental car or a guided tour with transport is required.
The hike to the main ruins, including the theater, is moderately challenging due to the mountainous terrain, so it suits visitors comfortable with an uphill walk more than those seeking an easy, flat ruin field.
No — his forces besieged the city in 333 BC but ultimately withdrew without taking it, making Termessos one of the few Anatolian cities to resist his campaign successfully.
