Aspendos Theatre Antalya — Aspendos Theatre is a Roman theatre near Antalya built between 161 and 180 AD, seating an estimated 7,000-13,000 people, and considered one of the best-preserved Roman theaters anywhere in the world. It still hosts opera and ballet performances today, nearly 1,900 years after construction.

Architect Zenon built the theater during the reign of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, funded as a gift from two wealthy brothers to their home city — a level of civic patronage typical of prosperous Roman Pamphylia. What sets Aspendos apart from most ancient theaters is how completely intact it remains: the full stage building (scaenae frons), seating bowl and acoustic design survive largely as built, which is why the venue still hosts real performances rather than functioning purely as a ruin to view from a rope barrier. Roughly 400,000 visitors come each year, making it one of the most-visited ancient sites in the Antalya region alongside Perge.

What should I know before visiting?

Wear comfortable shoes — the terrain is uneven and stone seating has no railings in most sections.
Little shade exists on-site; bring sunscreen and a hat, especially at midday in summer.
Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid both the heat and the heaviest tour-group crowds.
Combine with Perge, roughly 30 minutes away, for a fuller day of Roman ruins.
