An Istanbul photoshoot is a private session with a local photographer, usually 30 minutes to 2 hours, on a rooftop with Bosphorus and mosque views or at landmarks such as Galata Tower, Ortaköy and Sultanahmet. On GetYourGuide and Viator, prices start at about $57, and the popular flying-dress rooftop shoots run from $95 to $285. Below: the types compared, what’s actually included, the best spots and times, and when doing it yourself makes more sense.

Yes, if you want good photos of yourself, a couple or a family, because that’s the one thing you can’t take alone. No, if you only want shots of the landmarks: the same viewpoints are free, and a phone on a small tripod gets you most of the way. The flying-dress shoots are the exception that only works with a photographer, an assistant and a rooftop.
The real value is in three things a photographer brings: knowing which rooftop has the view you want, timing it for the light, and posing you so you don’t look stiff. Reviews on both platforms praise the posing help more than anything else.
Where it’s poor value: a 15-minute shoot with a handful of photos, or a “from” price that turns out to be per person with the dress and rooftop entry on top. Check those two things before you book.
| Type | Typical length | Price from | Best for | Example listings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flying-dress rooftop shoot | 30 min–1 hour | $95–$285 | Instagram, couples, birthdays | Flying Dress Rooftop Photographer on GetYourGuide ($95, 4.9 from 40 reviews); Rooftop Flying Dress Photo Shoot on Viator ($182, 4.8 from 179) |
| Quick rooftop or single landmark | 15–30 min | $57–$90 | A few good shots on a tight schedule | Rooftop with Bosphorus and Süleymaniye views ($57, 15 min); Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque ($90 per group, 30 min) |
| Multi-location photo walk | 45 min–2 hours | $111–$137 | First-timers who want variety | Galata Tower, Bosphorus & Hidden Gems ($111 per group up to 8, 4.7 from 12); Photoshoot at All Top Sightseeings ($137 per person, 5.0 from 195) |
| Couples and proposal shoots | 50 min–1 hour | $228 | Proposals, honeymoons, anniversaries | Photoshoot in Istanbul for couples ($228, 5.0 from 15) |
Listings mix the two. The Galata Tower walk above is priced per group of up to 8, while the All Top Sightseeings shoot is per person. For a couple or family, a per-group price is usually the better deal even when the headline number looks higher.
Check four things: how many edited photos you get, when they arrive, whether the dress and rooftop entry are included, and whether the price is per person or per group. These vary more than the headline price.
Mosques close to visitors during the five daily prayers, and you need to dress modestly inside: shoulders and knees covered, and a headscarf for women. Keep shoots outside in the courtyards and squares, and don’t photograph people praying. Our Blue Mosque guide has the visiting rules.
The most-booked backdrops are Galata’s rooftops, the Süleymaniye Mosque skyline, Ortaköy Mosque with the Bosphorus Bridge, and the square between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Go early in the morning for empty landmarks and soft light, or at sunset for rooftops.
| Spot | Why it works | Best time |
|---|---|---|
| Galata Tower and Karaköy | The medieval tower, steep lanes and the umbrella-covered street in Karaköy | Early morning, before the tower queue |
| Rooftop terraces (Eminönü, Süleymaniye, Galata) | Domes, minarets and the Bosphorus in one frame; where flying-dress shoots happen | Sunset; book these slots first |
| Ortaköy Mosque | The mosque on the water with the Bosphorus Bridge behind it | Early morning or blue hour |
| Sultanahmet Square | Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque facing each other | Right after sunrise, before tour groups |
| Balat | Colourful wooden houses and steep streets | Weekday mornings; these are people’s homes, so keep doorways clear |
Expect $57–$90 for a 15–30 minute session, $95–$285 for a flying-dress rooftop shoot, and $111–$228 for longer walks or couples’ shoots, before any dress or rooftop fees. Booking through GetYourGuide or Viator gives you reviews, a fixed price and free cancellation.
Doing it yourself? The same spots are free outside, though most rooftop cafés charge entry or expect you to order. A phone tripod and an early start beat the crowds; see our Istanbul guide for getting between them.
It depends on the listing. Some promise unlimited photos, all edited; others give 500+ originals with around 40 retouched. Delivery ranges from the same day to 2–3 days. Check the number before you book.
No. Flying-dress studios supply the dresses, usually in several colours. The dress can be an extra fee on top of the booking price, so ask the photographer for the total before you go.
Only with registration. The US State Department says drone pilots must register with the Turkish government before flying a drone over 1.1 pounds (500g), and commercial use needs approval. Some photographers include drone shots; ask whether they’re registered.
Prices and availability are handled by the ticket provider — we just point you there.
